Irish Life was founded in 1939, with the Irish government as a majority shareholder. The company was floated on the Irish Stock Exchange in 1991, with the government holding gradually eliminated. The Boards of Irish Life Plc and Irish Permanent Plc agreed proposals in 1999 to merge and create Irish Life and Permanent plc, now one of Ireland's largest financial services companies.

Irish Life Investment Managers (ILIM) is the asset management arm of Irish Life & Permanent plc. ILIM manages money on behalf of a wide range of institutional & retail, occupational DB & DC pensions, large multinational corporations, charities and domestic companies and is the largest manager of Irish pension assets. Currently managing assets of in excess of €30bn., ILIM has seen significant growth in funds under management since 1992 reflecting its recognised market innovation and leadership position.
